Implementação: O escudo das armas nacionais sobreposto à esfera armilar foi oficialmente adotado em 1911, após a Revolução de 5 de Outubro de 1910. A sanção legal do modelo verde e vermelho ocorreu através do decreto de 19 de junho de 1911, publicado no Diário do Governo a 30 de junho.
Composição: O escudo, com as cinco quinas e os sete castelos, encontra-se ao centro da bandeira, sobreposto a uma esfera armilar, simbolizando a história de Portugal e a Era dos Descobrimentos.
Cores: O verde representa a esperança e o vermelho a coragem e o sangue derramado, cores adotadas após a queda da monarquia.
A bandeira com o escudo sobre a esfera armilar passou a representar oficialmente a República Portuguesa após a mudança de regime em 1910.

Celebrating the establishment of the Portuguese Republic
The current design of the Portuguese flag, featuring the national coat of arms superimposed over the armillary sphere, was officially adopted in 1911.
Implementation: The national coat of arms over the armillary sphere was officially adopted in 1911, following the Revolution of 5 October 1910. The green and red flag was legally established by decree on 19 June 1911 and published in the Diário do Governo on 30 June.
Composition: The shield, displaying the five quinas and seven castles, is placed at the centre of the flag over an armillary sphere, symbolising Portugal’s history and the Age of Discovery.
Colours: Green represents hope, while red symbolises courage and the blood shed for the nation. These colours were adopted following the fall of the monarchy.
The flag featuring the shield over the armillary sphere became the official symbol of the Portuguese Republic after the change of regime in 1910.
